Congrès Armand-Frappier 2017
Manoir des Sables Hotel
Quebec

Held on: November 9-11, 2017

Congrès Armand-Frappier is a biennial scientific conference whose main goal is to give students an opportunity to promote their research in various fields of biosciences through oral and poster presentations, along with networking events. The whole organization is maintained by volunteer MSc and PhD students. This year also marked the 10th edition of the Armand-Frappier conference, thus special activities were organized for the occasion. We also introduced a new presentation format called “Bref, mon projet”, which consists of a 3-min presentation similar to “3-min thesis” and “Ma thèse en 180 secondes”. The conference was held from November 9-11, 2017 at the “Manoir des Sables” hotel in Orford, Quebec.

While we expected to attract around 150 participants, like in previous editions, over 200 participants attended the conference this year. Attendees were affiliated with a wider range of universities compared with previous editions, including INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier, UQAM, Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Montréal, CRDA Ste-Hyacinthe, Ottawa University and University of Miami. Our invited speakers were Pr. Sylvain Moineau, Pr. John Bell, Pr. Éric Marsault, Pr. Kessen Patten and Dr. Claude Champagne.

Except for the 5 invited speakers, poster and oral presentations were restricted to students and postdocs, while professors and research assistants acted as evaluators. Students and postdocs presented 25 oral presentations, 12 “Bref, mon projet” presentations and over 80 posters. A total of 4, 2 and 5 prizes were given for oral, “Bref, mon projet” and poster presentations, respectively.

The conference was built around 8 broad themes, many of which comply with the CSM’s interests: oncology, virology, immunology, pharmaco-chemistry, toxicology, microbiology, neurosciences and epidemiology. While microbiology consisted of a single theme, the number of presentations per theme was not distributed equally and thus, more than a third of presentations were included in microbiology. The CSM logo was shown during all coffee breaks as well as part of the slideshow shown throughout the banquet. Even though we received the 500$ from the CSM after the conference, we considered that the coffee break after Pr. Sylvain Moineau’s presentation was sponsored by the CSM. Pr. Sylvain Moineau’s presentation was of course well within the scope of the CSM, considering that he received the CSM Murray award in Waterloo a few months ago.
