Travel Information for CSM 2018 Attendees

From and to Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson Airport
The airport is located in the northwest corner of Winnipeg. The Fort Garry campus and nearby hotels are located in the southwest corner of Winnipeg. A taxicab ride is approximately 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and should cost $40-$60 CDN. Winnipeg bus transit does serve the airport; however, you’ll need to take a connecting bus(es) at a downtown terminal. Transit schedules are trimmed down on Sundays so plan accordingly.   • Follow Wellington Ave to King Edward St S/Rte 90 S (2.4 km)
  • Continue on Rte 90 S to Waverley St/Rte 80 S (11.8 km)
  • Follow Waverley St/Rte 80 S and Bison Dr to Chancellor Matheson Rd (2.5 km)

If staying in residence, parking passes are available for purchase from the Arthur V. Mauro residence office. For those staying in hotels and parking on campus, please contact Parking Services http://umanitoba.ca/campus/parking/.

Food and Drink on Fort Garry campus 
The University Centre, the main building for many of the conference events, hosts a Starbucks, a Tim Hortons, and a food court operated by University Services (see link for opening hours http://umanitoba.ca/campus/ancil_services/media/Dining_Hours.pdf). There are also three student-run establishments: Degrees restaurant (open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday), I.Q. Café and Billiards (8 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday), and the HUB Pub (6 pm to 12 am on Monday, 4 pm to 12 am on Wednesday and Thursday). Note that the CSM student mixer will take place in the HUB Pub on Tuesday evening. St. John’s College Daily Bread restaurant is open from 8 am to 4 pm.

For attendees arriving on Sunday June 17th afternoon/evening, arrangements have been made with the HUB Pub in the University Centre to be open from 5 pm to 11 pm. All other establishments on campus will be closed on Sunday.

The closest restaurants to the campus are a distance away – approximately 30 to 45 minutes by walking or 5-10 minutes by bus, depending on the direction. The bus terminal is conveniently located next to residence buildings. Take route #60 Downtown or #160 Downtown for a 5 min ride to the small strip mall located at University Crescent/Pembina Highway that includes Pita Pit and North Gardenrestaurants. If crossing Pembina Highway to the other side, there are a variety of restaurants located in the large strip mall (Barley Brothers, Nicolino’s, Sun Fortune, Applebee’s, etc.) If walking down Pembina Highway in a south direction, there are additional strip malls hosting a variety of stores including restaurants, shops, and a Safeway (includes a Liquor mart express). Or take the bus route #162 Fort Richmond or #170 Fort Richmond for a 10 minute ride to Richmond Plaza which hosts a Sobey’s, a variety of restaurants and shops, and a liquor mart. If looking to get back, take the bus bearing #60, #160, #162 or #170 University of Manitoba. Bus fare is $2.95 or you can buy bus tickets at the grocery stores, University Centre, 7-11, and Shopper Drug Mart.

Note: Your conference registration includes an evening reception, morning/afternoon coffee breaks and lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the President’s banquet on Thursday evening.

Active Living Centre 
Fort Garry campus features a recently upgraded exercise facility that includes access to a pool, track, fitness machines, squash/racquetball courts, and basketball/badminton courts. The facility is located nearby the residences. Please see link for further information http://umanitoba.ca/activelivingcentre/

The City of Winnipeg boasts a number of places of interest to tour which require a car/taxi or bus ride. See Winnipeg Tourism for additional information https://www.tourismwinnipeg.com/. An excursion to the Forks is planned for CSM attendees on Wednesday June 20th evening. Note that a Student Mixer Extra Event is also planned for Tuesday June 19th evening/night.

Some must-see places include:

Assiniboine Park and Zoo (includes the polar bear exhibit)

Fort Whyte Alive (bison, prairie dog and wetlands are highlights) 
~30 min car/taxi ride; not accessible by bus

Canadian Museum for Human Rights (located at the Forks)

Manitoba Museum (includes planetarium and fur trader replica ship Nonsuch)
