8th American Society for Microbiology - Biodefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting
Feb. 21, 2010 - Feb. 24, 2010

Venue: Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, Baltimore, MD

Description: The purpose of this meeting is to bring together individuals who are carrying out research to defend against the growing threat of bioterrorism and decision makers shaping the future biodefense research agenda, recognizing that emerging infectious diseases serve as a paradigm for handling the public threat of bioterrorism.

This meeting is intended for scientists, public health researchers and policy makers who need to be informed about the latest scientific developments. The meeting will include a series of keynote addresses by leaders in the field of biodefense and poster sessions presenting up-to-the-minute cutting-edge research on biothreat agents, vaccines, detection and diagnostic procedures, animal and plant pathogens, global surveillance, and other vital topics.

Laboratory Identification of Emerging Pathogenic Molds , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Apr. 6, 2010 - Apr. 8, 2010

Venue: Altlanta, GA - USA

Description: April 6-8, 2010 OR April 13-15, 2010

Join the expert faculty from the Mycotic Diseases Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other invited faculty for this basic-level, hands-on course in the identification of medically important molds. Lectures and laboratory exercises will provide workshop participants with an opportunity to identify a range of organisms, including those that are commonly isolated from superficial, subcutaneous, and systemic infections of humans, as well as a number of common laboratory contaminants. Methods for DNA-based identification and susceptibility testing will also be discussed.

This workshop is appropriate for public health laboratorians, clinical laboratory microbiologists, and medical technologists who are not experienced in the identification of molds.

Registration Fee: $ 325 (includes breaks and all workshop materials; cafeteria available for students to purchase lunch items of their choice)

Registration Deadline: March 23, 2010

Initiated in 1982, the Banff Conference on Infectious Diseases represents an intimate forum for internationally recognized experts to present their research on pathogenesis and other aspects of infectious diseases and host defenses. A poster session also allows registrants the opportunity to present their work. Nestled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the informal setting is conducive to discussing science with investigators at the forefront of their research areas. The conference includes scientific sessions in the mornings and evenings, with the afternoons reserved to allow exploration of the impressive surroundings with colleagues.

Molecular biology of Archaea II
Aug. 16, 2010 - Aug. 18, 2010

Venue: Robinson College, Cambridge, UK

Description: Abstract submission deadline: 14 June 2010
Earlybird registration deadline: 16 July 2010

Meeting Background
The archaea constitute a distinct domain of life yet several important aspects of their biochemical processes are closely related to those in eukaryotes. Archaea have therefore been used as a model system for studies on eukaryotes as well as being of very considerable interest in their own right. The adoption of archaeal model systems has shed light on the structure, function and evolution of essential cellular information processing machineries such as those involved in DNA replication, DNA repair and transcription.

Furthermore, many archaea inhabit extreme environments, and the mechanisms of adaptation to these apparently inimical niches are uniquely fascinating and important, with many biotechnological and industrial applications. However, beyond the extremophiles, it is becoming appreciated that archaea are an important and abundant components of the biosphere. This meeting will focus on recent advances in the understanding of archaeal molecular biology and will give a unique perspective on the evolution of eukaryotic information processing pathways as well as shedding light on the diversity of life on the planet.
